How to Make Carbonated Water at Home

Here we have two ways of making carbonated water at home.

  1. Fermentation
  2. Force carbonate with co2 tank

Each have pros and cons so you’ll have to decide which is best for you.

The fermentation method to make carbonated water means adding yeast and sugar then bottling it to create the carbonation.

Force carbonation requires more equipment but can be faster.

In this video we make carbonated water both ways.

Fermentation Method

Using a mini keg first fill the keg to the top leaving about 2 inches of head space. After that boil a 2 inch piece of ginger in a cup of water with 1 tablespoon of corn sugar. Once cooled add the ginger sugar water to the keg along with 1/4 teaspoon of yeast. Finally put in the vented bung and let it condition for 2 weeks.

Force Carbonation Method

For the forced carbonation method fill the keg with room temperature water and add 1 tablespoon lemon and lime juice/concentrate. Force carbonating the water at 25-30 psi for 3-5 days. This system is very simple all you have to do is attach the gas in and the line out.

I like both methods though the fermenting method does create a small amount of alcohol (about .2%). The more sugar you add the more alcohol will be made. The force carbonation method is a bit more expensive but makes carbonating water super easy. Also with the fermentation process you will get a slight flavor from the yeast that taste like… Yeast.
