Let’s take a deep dive into these mini kegs and see if they’re right for you. In this post I will answer the following questions:

  1. Size Options
  2. Cost
  3. Quality
  4. Ease of use
  5. Specs

List of Mini Kegs

Mini Kegs come in a variety of sizes but the ones I am talking about are all less than 5 gallons. Choosing the right size really depends on each brewers individual needs and space. All of the following kegs are designed to be used with Ball Locks, Regulator and a Co2 Tank

Personally I like the smaller ones because I have a small space.

1.3 Gallon Mini Keg

This is the most popular mini keg and can be found in multiple places online and in stores.

These kegs are made to be carbonated using priming sugar. Currently there is no commercial way to force carbonate them. However, I have found a way using a DIY Tap system using ball locks.

  1. Cost – Less than $20
  2. Quality – Good (could be a little thicker)
  3. Ease of use – Very Easy
  4. Specs – 5L capacity, Height 10 inches, Diameter 7.25 inches

Additional notes – These kegs are easy to use with priming sugar. They recommend using 1 level tablespoon of priming sugar for the whole keg. The mini kegs can also be used with a vented bung to help keep them carbonated for longer.

1.75 Gallon Keg

This keg is most like a 5 gallon keg. The main difference here is the size. This one is only 1.75 gallons and stands 11 inches high.

  1. Cost – $120
  2. Quality – Great (very sturdy)
  3. Ease of use – Very Easy
  4. Specs – 6L Capacity, Height 11 inches, Diameter 8.5 inches

Additional notes – This mini Cornelius keg is built from 304 grade stainless steel making it easy to clean. The top and bottom have a rubber mold making them very durable and easy to carry.

1.75 Gallon Keg

One of the most cost effective kegs this one is a great option for a smaller budget! It’s well built and made to be compact and easy to transport.

  1. Cost – $75
  2. Quality – Great
  3. Ease of use – Very Easy
  4. Specs – 6L Capacity, Height 11 inches, Diameter 9 inches

Additional notes – This is a great keg for beginners who want to save some money or give kegging homebrew a try. Its compact size allows it to fit in most refrigerators.

3 Gallon Keg

  1. Cost – $85
  2. Quality – Great
  3. Ease of use – Very Easy
  4. Specs – 11L Capacity, Height 17 inches, Diameter 8.5 inches

Additional notes – Flat rubber handles allows for easy cleaning and ability to flip keg upside down. Good quality keg that should last a long time.

That will conclude my mini kegs for homebrew review of kegs I have used however, here are some other sizes and styles of kegs.

2.5 Gallon Single Handle

2.5 Gallon Keg

Mini Kegs are great for homebrew and are helping save hours on bottling day. Each keg solves a unique problem and only you can decide which one is right for you.

After you have a keg you will still need a few items like these:

Co2 Regulator

Co2 Tank

Ball Locks

Gas and Liquid Line

Thanks and happy kegging!
