How to Make Extract Only Homebrew Beer

Discover how to make extract only homebrew beer with these simple calculations and guidelines.

For the most basic recipe you can make a SMASH beer. Smash stands for Single Malt and Single Hop. It’s also helpful to remember that for every gallon of water, use 1 pound of malt extract.

Depending on your specific recipe requirements- this is the most basic ratio but it can be adjusted as needed without affecting flavor!

The reality of making beer is boiling water. If you can turn on a stove or burner and boil water, you can make beer!

Step-By-Step Extract Only Homebrew Directions

The first step here is to fill your kettle with water and start heating it up to boiling.

For this recipe I made a 2 gallon batch so I boiled 2 gallons of water.

Once your water is boiling you can add the malt. What is the ratio again? That’s right 1:1. 1 pound of malt for every gallon of water.

When adding the malt be ready to turn down the heat as the sugar in the malt tends to create a lot of bubbles and will cause a boil over if you’re not paying attention.

Once you get a rolling boil you can get ready to add the hops. I like the more floral and less bitter hops but this is your chance to add the flavors you like. If you’re still new just pick some hops to get started. Once you’ve been brewing for a while you will start to notice which hops you prefer.

Hops are added on what is called a “hop schedule.” This typically is broken down into 2 time frames. One at the beginning of the boil and one at the end of the boil. The hops added at the beginning are commonly known as the bittering hops and the ones at the end are the aroma or flavor hops.

The hop schedule for this beer is 15 minutes into the boil and again 15 minutes before “flame out” or finish.
