I might get in trouble for saying this but I think it’s worth the risk.
Bottling homebrew with a funnel is fine. In fact I think it’s a good Idea.
Let me explain.
For small batches of beer it’s not easy or practical to get out all of your bottling equipment for just a few bottles. So what can you do if you need an easy way to bottle homebrew?
I used the Fizz less funnel for my homebrew and the beer turned out great! This might not be the best solution for everyone but it worked perfect for me.
Why is it a bad idea to use a funnel?
The problem with using a funnel is the potential to get oxygen into your beer.
After fermentation has completed you want to do your best to keep excess oxygen out of your homebrew.
It can affect the flavor and stability of your beer.
When using a funnel you are really asking for trouble. For this reason you need to be super careful when puring the beer and be sure to avoid excess splashing and agitation.
How to use the funnel method?
It’s actually really simple. Check out this video and I will describe it as well
- Brew your small batch
- Ferment for 2 weeks
- Using a pot take a few ounces of your brew and add priming sugar
- Dissolve sugar and add the rest of the beer
- Place funnel in bottle
- Pour beer into bottle
Now that was a simple version assuming you already know how to bottle.
How does the funnel work?
The Fizz Less funnel works because it has a small hook on the tip. When the liquid pours it is directed to the side of the bottle which significantly reduces the foam, fizz and potential for introducing oxygen
My Opinion
I really like this and believe it is a good solution for very small batches. It is a great solution for those looking to find an easy way to bottle homebrew.
If you don’t mind the risk of adding a little oxygen to your homebrew in exchange for a supper fast easy solution for bottling. I highly recommend the Fizz Less funnel.
