How to Reuse Mini Keg for Homebrew
Here I am going to show you how to reuse a mini keg for homebrew. You can get these kegs at some stores and you can even purchase them new online.
I will add links below to new kegs, bungs and other homebrew supplies I use often.
These kegs are great and will allow you to spend less time bottling your homebrew and more time drinking it!
Fun fact: 5 liters is equal to about 1.3 gallons. That is about 12 bottles of beer.
Step by step directions below and a video Here:
What you will need to reuse mini keg
- Pliers
- Electrical Tape (optional)
- Flat head Screw driver
- Mini Keg
First make sure the keg is empty (this is achieved by drinking all the beer).
Once the keg is empty you can begin the process to reuse the keg.
Here are the steps
- Wrap tape around the pliers, this will protect the plastic bung
- With the pliers pull the plastic piece out of the bung
- Using the screwdriver or pointed object push the other plastic piece of the bung into the keg
- Take the pliers and gently grab the rubber bung in the keg
- You can use the crew driver to get some leverage
- Once you have a firm grip pull the rubber bung out of the keg
- fill the keg with some water
- pull out the tap at the bottom of the keg and open it (this will allow airflow)
- Tip the keg upside down and place your hand under the hole
- Wait for the water to drain with the plastic piece inside
- you might have to repeat these steps a time or two until the piece comes out
- Once the keg is empty you can sanitize it to get it ready for home brew
- Collect the 3 pieces for the vented bung and put them back together
- Fill you keg with hombrew
- Add conditioning sugar (12 grams of sugar in 2 tablespoons of water)
- Put in the Vented bung and wait 2 weeks
Notes for Reusing Mini Keg
Adding more sugar, in some cases, has lead to kegs warping and potentially exploding.
